Sustainability has always been important to me, and I have long valued the simple philosophy of the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle<\/strong>. Wherever possible, I incorporate these values not only into my everyday life, but also into the way I create my Artworks and run my business.<\/p>\n Rather than automatically purchasing everything brand new, I love finding ways to reuse, repurpose and breathe new life into materials that already exist.<\/p>\n The canvases and frames I use to create my Original Artworks are predominantly sourced through second-hand markets, Facebook Marketplace, Op Shops and Tip Shops. I’m also incredibly fortunate to be gifted unwanted and pre-loved canvases and frames from neighbours, family, friends and members of my local community.<\/p>\n Some come to me with old paintings, marks, scratches or signs of their previous life. Others simply need a little cleaning, repairing or preparation before they’re ready to be transformed.<\/p>\n Rather than seeing these imperfections as a reason to discard something, I see the potential in what it could become.<\/p>\n Each piece is carefully assessed and prepared before I begin creating, giving a previously unwanted canvas or frame an entirely new purpose as part of an Original Nikki Silk Artwork.<\/p>\n I take the same approach when sourcing paint. I’m always on the lookout for interesting colours at second-hand and car boot markets, through Marketplace, and amongst those fabulous “whoops, I chose the wrong colour!” paint pots hiding in the clearance section of my local hardware stores.<\/p>\n I love discovering colours this way. Not only does it help reduce unnecessary waste, but sometimes an unexpected colour find can inspire an entirely new Artwork or become the perfect addition to a piece I’m already creating.<\/p>\n One of the things I love most about creating my Artworks this way is knowing that I’m giving new life to canvases, frames and materials that may otherwise have unnecessarily ended up in landfill.<\/p>\n There’s something really special about taking an item that someone else no longer wants, seeing the potential in it and transforming it into something completely new.<\/p>\n And when I find my materials through local Op Shops, there’s an added bonus – my purchase can also help support the wonderful charities and community organisations behind them.<\/p>\n For me, sustainability doesn’t have to mean doing everything perfectly.
